Manchester United linked to Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni

Manchester United are being linked to Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni, with Gazzetta dello Sport reporting interest from the Red Devils.

A move to Manchester United is cited as ‘the most credible’ option for Bastoni, who has a contract with Inter until 2024.

Tottenham are also said to be interested, and have the advantage of having Bastoni’s former manager Antonio Conte on board, but a move to United is claimed to be more likely.

Inter Milan are looking for around 60 million Euros (£51m), and claim Manchester United are ‘studying the right offer’ ahead of a potential move.

What you need know: Alesandro Bastoni

Alessandro Bastoni played 31 times for Inter Milan this past season, scoring once, and also providing three assists.

Bastoni is a centre-back, who made career debut for Atalanta aged just 17 under Gianpiero Gasperini, back in 2016.

Now 23, Bastoni has played 118 games for Inter, after signing for for the club in 2017 for £25 million. He was then loaned back for two years, with Inter recalling him after one.

Bastoni is a senior Italy international with 11 caps, although won’t be going to the World Cup this year after Inter failed to qualify.

Sempre Inter report one of Bastoni or centre-back partner Milan Skiriniar will be sold this summer, with the club under financial pressure.

Bastoni has been anointed as the successor of Giorginio Chiellini for Italy’s national team, by the departing Juventus defender.

Chiellini was quoted by Football Italia last week: “Bastoni has different characteristics to me, but Italy can sleep easy at night knowing he is there and I can assure you he will be remembered not as the new Chiellini, but as Alessandro Bastoni.”

He is likely to play against England in the upcoming UEFA Nations League match on June 11.

Among United’s options

At the moment Bastoni is among Manchester United’s options at centre-back and is the most expensive one.

The £51 million Inter are looking for is more than Pau Torres would cost from Villarreal, cited by AS at £42.8 million.

Jurrien Timber would cost between £30-40 million from Ajax, while Lisandro Martinez could cost just £25 million, The Telegraph claim.

How much United decide to spend on a centre-back will be influenced by plans for other positions, midfield, striker, and potentially full-back.
