Manchester United interested in signing Thomas Meunier from Borussia Dortmund

Manchester United are interested in signing Belgium right-back Thomas Meunier from Borussia Dortmund, reports The Telegraph.

With Aaron Wan-Bissaka not forming part of Erik ten Hag‘s plans at Old Trafford, the 52-year-old is keen to sign another right-back who can provide stern competition to Diogo Dalot.

Ethan Laird has joined Championship side Queens Park Rangers on a season-long loan and uncertainty remains whether Brandon Williams forms part of the former Ajax gaffer’s plans.

Like the entire Manchester United team that has featured in the first two Premier League games of the season, Dalot’s had a difficult start to the campaign.

Thirty-year-old Meunier has two years left to run on his contract at Signal Iduna Park having joined the Bundesliga giants on a free transfer from Paris Saint Germain two years ago.

The Telegraph states: “It is understood that a fee of around €15 million (£12.6 million) has been proposed for Meunier who has been linked with a move to Barcelona.”

The same report states that Meunier looks a more likely target than Barcelona right-back Sergino Dest who played under Ten Hag at Ajax.

Such is United’s embarrassing and seemingly evident lack of transfer strategy or recruitment model – Meunier was considered an option when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was in charge before the Red Devils splashed out £50m to sign Wan-Bissaka from Crystal Palace three years ago.

The arrival of Meunier could help unlock and ignite Jadon Sancho‘s Manchester United career.

The pair played alongside one and other 22 times for Dortmund and they often lined up on the right-hand side.

United’s £73m signing has struggled to establish a fruitful partnership with either Wan-Bissaka or Dalot, but the arrival of familiar face Meunier could help hit lift off on our number 25’s Manchester United career.
