Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez is quickly establishing himself as a fan favourite.
The centre-back may stand at 5ft’ 9″, as his detractors can’t help point out – but he delivered a towering performance against Liverpool.
United supporters voted Martinez as man of the match via the club website, in an overwhelmingly one-sided poll.
Martinez lived up to his ‘Butcher’ nickname with a warrior-like display in the 2-1 victory.

Lisandro Martinez received more than half the total vote as he was by far the top choice for the supporter awarded man of the match award.

- Marcus Rashford: 9 per cent
- Jadon Sancho: 9 per cent
Other players received smaller votes of five per cent or fewer.
Rashford and Sancho scored Manchester United’s goals, and so for Martinez to win the vote so overwhelmingly, shows how impressive he was.
This was just Martinez’s third start for United, and he was excellent throughout, showing signs of building a strong partnership with Raphael Varane at the back.
Playing such a key role in a high profile win has certainly endeared Martinez further to United fans. This was just a taster of brighter days to come.
