Manchester United winger Antony returned to the starting line-up against Galatasaray after missing the weekend win through injury.
Erik ten Hag struck true to form and started Antony as soon as he returned to fitness, trusting the player he signed for Ajax, and then brought to Manchester United.
Antony’s form has come under a lot of scrutiny this season. He is yet to score, and is yet to assist.
That worrying statistic did not change last night, however, there were some brighter signs.
Manchester United supporters on social media were surprisingly impressed with Antony’s performance, praising the recently under-fire player, believing he may have had his best ever game for the club.

Manchester United fans comment on Antony
One Manchester United fan believed it was arguably Antony’s best performance. They wrote: “We were great going forward tonight. Antony was as good as I’ve seen him.”
Another added: “Thought Antony was class tonight, best game at the club for sure.”
More comments included: “I thought Antony played well today,” and “Despite the disappointing result Antony played a good game.”
Another supporter wrote: “Everybody played their heart out, even Antony.”
The complimentary comments kept up, with one fan noting: “Antony actually played football today ..his best performance in a United shirt.”
Another conceded: “I’m far from being Antony’s biggest fan but the lad played well tonight.”
One even referenced his price tag, adding: “Antony showed his ability tonight. He genuinely played like an £80m winger. Beating his man on the outside, looked lively, A constant threat. If he can find consistency.”
Antony’s best game this season
There is a pretty low bar, but this was certainly Antony’s best all round game this season. He worked hard on both sides of the ball, and wasn’t afraid to try a trick or two.
The Brazilian had some good games last season when he first signed, and memorably scored the winner against Barcelona at Old Trafford, although started that game on the bench. Another strong showing saw him provide an assist and score away at Nottingham Forest in April. So whether this was his best ever game, might be stretching it a little.
This was a step in the right direction at least. Facundo Pellistri didn’t take his chance when he came off the bench, and Antony could start against Newcastle on Saturday, although will face a challenge from Marcus Rashford on the right now.
Competition for places is good, and if he can build on this display, maybe Manchester United can get something close to the winger we hoped we were getting.
