Manchester United dropped points for the first time since Michael Carrick returned to the club as head coach when the Red Devils required a late equaliser to rescue a point against West Ham.

Michael Carrick’s return to Manchester United started with a four-game win streak, including victories over Premier League title contenders Man City and Arsenal.

The winning run came to an end on Tuesday night when United drew 1-1 against West Ham, thanks to a 96th-minute equaliser from Benjamin Sesko, who converted Bryan Mbeumo’s cross with a delicate flick.

West Ham opened the scoring through Tomas Soucek in the 50th minute, as the Hammers took advantage of shoddy defending from Luke Shaw.

The left-back was unlucky not to have scored in the first half when Shaw had an effort cleared off the line by former United defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Manchester United fans name Man of the Match

United fans took to TalkingPoints to name their Man of the Match following the 1-1 draw at the London Stadium.

With 657 United In Focus readers voting, there were three players who dominated the poll, with one winner emerging for his late heroics.

It comes as no surprise that Sesko was popular on the poll given his late equaliser, but Kobbie Mainoo and Casemiro were both solid performers in the middle of the pitch.

While Bruno Fernandes had 6.85% of the vote, another 7.46% voted for ‘other’, meaning they opted for a player that wasn’t one of the six stars nominated.

United fans had lots to say in the comments section following the full-time whistle.

One reader nominated Sesko as his Man of the Match before adding: “But Yoro was sensational those last 10 minutes.”

Another wrote: “Gotta be Sesko, I’d drop Amad for Sesko next game.”

Meanwhile, there were some claims for Mainoo in midfield.

“Mainoo controlled the midfield,” one fan said. “Would like to see him next to Martinez and Yoro or De Ligt alongside Maguire.”

Another fan was more critical of the team’s overall performance against the Hammers, writing: “My God we did look flat footed at times, in this game. Fresh legs were needed earlier in second half. So many players were off, and this summer we need some younger players in areas that it really shows we are lacking speed and technical ability.”
