It was a moment Erik ten Hag needed. It was a moment Manchester United’s fans needed. It was a moment the club as a whole needed, a late, late winner when all seemed lost.

When Scott McTominay flicked in the winner passed Brentford goalkeeper Thomas Strakosha, the sheer bedlam at Old Trafford was understandable, a season of torment may just have had its lift-off.

For 92 minutes of the encounter at Old Trafford, Manchester United were huffing and puffing and it seemed the result would be another fait accompli, another dour and drab home defeat.

But the inspired substitute saved the day for United. McTominay, who was seemingly being forced out of the club by the former Ajax, rescued the game for Erik ten Hag.

Dalot’s reaction

One player’s rather emotional reaction, in particular, summed it all up. Diogo Dalot, who was once again bombing up and down that right-hand side, collapsed to his knees and laid flat on the hallowed Old Trafford turf.

The naysayer, or rival fans, will say that it was a winner to rescue a game against a side United should be beating but it looked like yet another day of frustration was dawning on the Old Trafford crowd.

To win a game in that circumstance, the reaction from the Portuguese right-back was understandable. Wins like that can turn seasons around.

Alejandro Garnacho, another second-half substitute, was flapping his arms around in a state of delirious shock, it was an amazing moment.

Erik ten Hag’s moment

It has been a torrid season so far for the former Ajax coach. He has spent big money on three significant areas of the pitch and, as things stand, only one has been a success, so far.

So when McTominay’s flicked header went over the line, a usually subdued Ten Hag, one for a simple punch of the air with his fist, couldn’t resist.

The 53-year-old jumped in celebration and the smile on his face told its own story.

Moments like that, as mentioned, can change a season. To win a game where it looked like it would be a loss is special, to do it in injury time is magnificent.

This could be Ten Hag’s big moment.
