Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has taken a leaf out of Sir Alex Ferguson’s book.
It has been open season on Manchester United since the weekend. A poor performance against Newcastle was not reflected by the 1-0 scoreline. It could quite easily have been a four-goal margin.
What has followed, has been a spectacularly miserable sight to behold. Television pundits have torn into the underperformers, with Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford singled out for criticism. And that’s right because they were poor.
But over the past 24 hours, the reports have taken a sour turn. ESPN report Erik ten Hag has lost ‘half the dressing room’, and then this morning The MEN piled in with more dressing room leaks criticising the manager and his signings, claiming players are losing faith in the boss.

Ten Hag bans reporters
Now Erik ten Hag and Manchester United have had enough.
The MEN reports it has been banned from attending today’s pre-match press conference along with three other news organisations.
Manchester United fans react
If there’s one thing Manchester United fans don’t want to hear, it is the players leaking against another manager. The same patterns which have led to previous bosses being sacked are being repeated.
Here is a look at how Manchester United fans reacted on social media, with many making the Sir Alex Ferguson comparison, who also banned journalists who he felt caused problems for his squad…
- “Erik ten Hag is exactly what the certain players, journalists and media don’t want at Manchester United.”
- “Love this. Well done ETH. Following SAF lead.”
- “United fans need to back Ten Hag. it’s clear some of the players and British media are trying to get him sacked, it’s disgusting.”
- “Good on Ten Hag. His press conference – he can let who he wants in there, as Fergie used to do.”
- “Ten Hag moving like Sir Alex.”
- “Ten Hag taking the Fergie route now with lazy journalists who spout nonsense. Good on him.”
- “Erik Ten Hag has my support until the end.”
- “If you’ve not got Erik Ten Hag’s back in this you need to have a word with yourself.”
Manchester United are entering a run of three home games against Chelsea, Bournemouth and Bayern Munich, and Erik ten Hag needs the fans onside more than ever right now.
He is clearly not willing to stand for the constant undermining of his authority which have ended the managerial stints of his predecessors, and whether you like it or not, you have to respect his desire to fight back.
