Lisandro Martinez is full of admiration for a player who lasted just one season at Manchester United.

There was no denying Angel di Maria’s quality, during his one short year at Manchester United. But amid his clear ability to impact games, it was also apparent he lacked the heart to succeed.

The winger quit after just one season at Old Trafford, forcing through a lucrative move to Paris Saint-Germain which saw Manchester United take a loss on him.

For Argentina, however, Di Maria has shown more heart. Throughout his career, his international role was not one he could walk away from, until now.

Angel di Maria retires from Argentina

Angel di Maria has announced his intention to retire from international football. AS reports he will quit the Argentina national team after the 2024 Copa America.

Whatever the result of the tournament, the 35-year-old can leave on a high after winning the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, making up for their final defeat in 2014.

Di Maria may not be at all popular at Manchester United, but he has the eternal respect of one of the Red Devils’ most popular players, Lisandro Martinez.

Martinez sent a message to Di Maria, thanking him for his contribution, adding, ‘You are a legend’.

Angel di Maria numbers at Manchester United

Angel di Maria spent one season at Manchester United in 2014/15. And despite not living up to his £59 million price tag, he did not do badly.

In 27 Premier League games he scored three goals and provided 10 assists. While the goal return was low, he clearly made a positive contribution with his passing.

It’s just a shame he did not show the resolve to stick around and build on it.
