Manchester United eyeing summer move for Villarreal winger Arnaut Danjuma, claims Romano
Manchester United threw countless attacking options on the pitch against Watford at the weekend and still could not find a breakthrough. So don’t be surprised to see the Red Devils continue to look to strengthen in the summer.
Journalist Fabrizio Romano says United are eyeing two wingers with view to potential summer deals. United’s need for a winger has been created after Mason Greenwood was taken out of the first team picture due to off-field reasons.
One player named by Romano is Ajax winger Antony, with 90Min first claiming the Red Devils’ interest in the Brazilian sensation. The other is Villarreal winger Arnaut Danjuma.
Romano told FIVE: “Keep an eye on two names for the summer for that position. Danjuma and Antony. Two players both of them interest of top clubs. Liverpool, Manchester United its true they are following him.
“Antony is a top player Man United are following. He’s not the only one, but one they are following. Same with Danjuma. Danjuma is doing fantastic with Villarreal.”
Danjuma has caught United’s attention
Danjuma, 25, starred at Old Trafford in late September for Villarreal and gave Diogo Dalot a torrid time as the La Liga side narrowly lost 2-1.
The Spanish side snapped him up from Bournemouth last summer in a £21.3 million deal, after he scored 15 goals in 33 Championship games.
This season Danjuma has scored 12 goals in all competitions and provided four assists, with four of his goals coming in the Champions League.
The Athletic report Danjuma has a £62.5million release clause in his contract, although United might try to do a deal for less.
Speaking on BT Sport earlier this year, ex-United forward Michael Owen raved: “We mentioned the game at Old Trafford earlier in the season and he was absolutely exceptional. He plays on that left side and he’s very direct, he can beat players, he can score goals and he comes in and he’s an attacking player and you know, he gave that Manchester United defence a real scare.”
Sancho plans will influence United’s choice
Danjuma is a left-sided winger which means Jadon Sancho would shift predominantly onto Manchester United’s right side.
Whereas if United bought Ajax winger Antony, who plays on the right, Sancho would be shifted over to the left, where he has looked very comfortable lately and produced some of his best moments.
How United plan to use Sancho next season will shape the club’s transfer decision when it comes to signing a winger, Danjuma or Antony, although the manager will play a part too.
If United succeed in hiring Ajax boss Erik Ten Hag, a move for Antony would surely be the preference.
