Manchester United expected to move for Gakpo after new £67.6m Antony bid rejected
Sky Sports reported yesterday United were set to make a ‘massive offer’ for the Brazil international.
Ajax have rejected Manchester United’s bid and the Red Devils are now ‘not optimistic’ they will be successful in signing the winger.
£67.6 million (80m Euros) is already a very high figure and paying even more would be an even bigger risk for a player only proven in the Netherlands.
United expected to move for Gakpo
Manchester United are now expected to turn to PSV Eindhoven winger Cody Gakpo, The Athletic state.
Gakpo, 23, would be available at around half the price, with The Telegraph reporting he would cost £35 million.
Last season he outscored Antony, and while Erik ten Hag has worked with the Brazilian at Ajax, this might be a more sensible spend.
- CODY GAKPO 21/22: 21 Goals, 15 assists
- ANTONY 21/22: 12 goals, 10 assists
A move for Gakpo has been delayed by PSV’s Champions League qualifier against Rangers, with the second leg taking place in the Netherlands next week.
Another option linked is Atletico Madrid winger Yannick Carrasco, who The Telegraph report is available at £25.5 million.
United’s big bid for Antony was likely the last attempt. The club are thought to have some extra money available after pulling out of a move for Frenkie de Jong, however, they are also panicking amid supporter unrest and a poor start to the Premier League season.
Ajax are determined not to lose Antony after losing several key players already this window, including last year’s player of the season Lisandro Martinez, who joined United.
