Manchester United defender Alex Telles joins Sevilla on season-long loan
The Brazilian international will spend the 2022-23 season at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium under the tutelage of Julen Lopetegui.
Following the arrival of Erik ten Hag’s first summer signing Tyrell Malacia, the 29-year-old found himself as the club’s third-choice left-back with Luke Shaw also ahead of him alongside the Netherlands international in the pecking order.
During pre-season, United’s number 27 filled in at centre-back and in midfield as Ten Hag prioritised giving other players minutes at left-back.
Alex Telles joins Sevilla on loan
There is no buy option or obligation to purchase Telles on Sevilla’s part included in the loan deal and Telles will be hoping to establish himself as the Spanish side’s number one left-back.
The six-time Brazil international joins Los Blanquirrojos after Anthony Martial spent the second half of last season on loan at the side that will participate in this season’s Champions League.
Manchester United paid Porto £13.6m to sign Alex Telles in October 2020 and he has made 50 appearances for the Red Devils so far.
His only goal for the twenty-time league champions was a sumptuous volley in last season’s Champions League group stage game against Villarreal at Old Trafford.
Telles has two years left to run on his Manchester United contract and the club have the option of extending his deal by a further 12 months.
Sevilla will be covering the entirety of Telles’ wages during his season-long stay in Spain.
While Ten Hag is keen to make further signings none more so than Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong, several more first-team stars who are on the periphery of the squad will likely either be sold or go out on loan.
Telles is the third Manchester United player to leave the club on loan this summer, he joins Dean Henderson and Alvaro Fernandez.
