Plans for Manchester United’s new stadium remains stuck in development until a key issue is resolved.
In March 2025, Manchester United unveiled new ambitious plans to build a new stadium adjacent to the current Old Trafford site.
A hold-up in acquiring the land required has pushed the whole project back, with a new target date of ‘by 2035’ now set for completion.
This has also impacted United finalising some of the finer points in terms of stadium design.

No design confirmed for new stadium
When Manchester United unveiled the plans for the new stadium, artists’ impressions rendering what it could look like were created.
One of the more controversial aspects of the initial proposals was the big canopy covering the area outside the stadium. This could now be scrapped.
There is also no guarantee that the trident-like spire will also be part of the final design.
BBC Sport report that the reason there is no final design yet is due to the ongoing land dispute.
“Until United know what land they can use, they cannot settle on a final design, which is needed to establish how much it will cost and to work out the best way to fund it.”
The whole project is forecast to cost a total £2 billion, with the capacity of the new stadium targeted for 100,000 fans.

Talks ongoing
Collette Roche, stadium development CEO, said in March that the situation was a ‘complex’ one that United aim to resolve as quickly as possible.
“I’ve been spending a lot of time talking to all the local landowners to understand where that needs to be, and we’re progressing that really, really well, and I’m hoping to be able to share some positive news on that front in the next few months.”
United fans are still waiting for an update, and the club won’t want talks to drag on much longer – as there is clearly a lot of work ahead.
