Manchester United are monitoring Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy who has entered the last 12 months of his contract, according to 90min.

The 35-year-old scored 17 Premier League goals last season but he is yet to enter talks about a new deal with the Foxes. Chelsea are also reportedly monitoring Vardy’s situation.

Brendan Rodgers’ side are the only team yet to make a signing during the summer transfer window and with uncertainty surrounding the futures of star players Kasper Schmeichel, Wesley Fofana, Youri Tielemans and James Maddison, Vardy’s future could also lie away from the King Power Stadium.

While the future of Leicester’s main man has been brought into question, Manchester United and Erik ten Hag have had to contend with the same issue ever since the Dutchman began work at Carrington.

Cristiano Ronaldo remains at the Theatre of Dreams but that isn’t for a lack of trying from his agent Jorge Mendes.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner, who was absent from the club’s pre-season tour due to family reasons, wants to compete in next season’s Champions League and ensure he can maintain his advantage over great rival Lionel Messi in the competition’s record books.

With several of Europe’s top clubs opting against pursuing United’s number seven, the likelihood of the 37-year-old, who made his first appearance under Ten Hag in the friendly against Rayo Vallecano, staying looks to be increasing and his former United teammate Rio Ferdinand has backed the Portuguese captain to stay put.

While Ronaldo isn’t renowned for his pressing and running out of possession, the same cannot be said for Vardy.

Despite being in the twilight years of his career like Ronaldo, Vardy’s blistering pace hasn’t diminished nor has his ability to score goals – he also puts a shift in for the team and is often hassling and harrying the opposition centre-backs while in possession.

The 26-time former England international has scored 15 Premier League goals in each of his last two campaigns and has 133 top-flight goals since making his Premier League debut in 2014.

Vardy, who sits 14th in the Premier League’s all-time top scorers, scored his first Premier League goal against the Red Devils.

Leicester’s number nine has scored six goals against United during his career and there’s no doubt he would suit and likely buy into Ten Hag’s intense philosophy.

But like Edinson Cavani last season, Vardy has started to pick up niggly injuries as his career has wore on.

Like Ronaldo and Cavani, Vardy isn’t the long-term solution to our striking predicament, but if a move for the former Fleetwood Town star can be brokered, United’s stance on keeping a seemingly wantaway Ronaldo could change.
