Manchester United and Barcelona holding talks over Frenkie de Jong, but Dutchman remains unconvinced

Manchester United and Barcelona have reached an agreement over a transfer fee for Frenkie de Jong, according to Spanish journalist Oriol Domenech.

However, Domenech implies that the Dutch midfielder is still not interested in joining the Red Devils despite remaining in contact with his compatriot Erik ten Hag.

De Jong, who was part of the Ajax side that reached the 2019 Champions League semi-finals under Ten Hag, could be one of the biggest players at the Nou Camp that is sold this summer.

The Catalans spent £65m to sign the gifted ball-playing midfielder from the Amsterdam giants in the summer of 2019, but with Xavi’s cash-strapped side needing to sell to fund their rebuild this summer, De Jong could be sold if Barcelona recoup the £65m they spent on him.

The big issue for Manchester United is De Jong’s desire to play Champions League football which transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has previously aired.

The 25-year-old could join an illustrious group of players that have played with Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi if he headed to the Theatre of Dreams this summer.

But it’s clear that De Jong is hesitant about making the move to the Reds despite the familiarity of Ten Hag taking the reins at the club.

However, with Barcelona seemingly eager to sell and Ten Hag wanting to reunite with his former prodigy, this could be a saga that in normal circumstances could drag for the majority of the summer.

But given Barcelona’s well-documented need to sell and Ten Hag wanting to kickstart his era with a statement signing, a resolution could be found.

But that decision will fall with De Jong and it looks like it all comes down to whether he is willing to give up Champions League football for a season, depending on whether Ten Hag can guide United back into Europe’s top club competition.
