Manchester United continue their Premier League campaign with a trip to Sunderland this weekend for the first time since 2017.

In the reverse fixture this season, Manchester United beat Sunderland 2-0 at Old Trafford under Ruben Amorim.

But the last time the Red Devils travelled away to face Sunderland in the Premier League was back in 2017 when Jose Mourinho was manager.

It has been nine years since United last travelled to the North East to face Sunderland at the Stadium of Light, and naturally, the team has changed dramatically.

Mourinho lined up the Red Devils in a 4-3-3 formation with Zlatan Ibrahimovic leading the line.

Sergio Romero was in goal, behind a back four that included Luke Shaw, Marcos Rojo, Eric Bailly and Matteo Darmian.

Interestingly, Shaw is the only player still at the club from the starting XI. He is currently United’s longest-serving player.

Ibrahimovic opened the scoring before Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Marcus Rashford scored in the second half to secure all three points.

Michael Carrick and Marcus Rashford were on the bench

While Shaw is the only name in the starting line-up still at United, there were some noticeable names on the bench for that 3-0 win at the Stadium of Light.

United interim head coach Michael Carrick was named on the bench by Mourinho, but was an unused substitute.

Rashford is still on United’s books in 2025/26, although he is spending the season out on loan with Barcelona. He came off the bench to replace Lingard in the 64th minute and scored in the 89th.

The other substitutes on that day were Joel Pereira, Axel Tuanzebe, Daley Blind, Timothy Fosu-Mensah and Anthony Martial.
