Manchester United’s poor form in European competitions continued as they were held to a 1-1 draw against FC Twente and a 3-3 draw against FC Porto.

Erik ten Hag’s sides form in European competitions has been abysmal and United’s 1-1 draw against FC Twente at Old Trafford is another example of this.

The Red Devils will be hoping to right the wrongs from last season as the club finished bottom of their UEFA Champions League group.

In fact, United have won just one out of their last nine European fixtures. Here we take a look at United’s results.

Man United vs FC Porto 3-3 UEFA Europa League

Marcus Rashford and Rasmus Hojlund had fired Manchester United two goals up in Portugal but the Portuguese giants completed an unlikely turnaround with Samu Omorodion, who was linked to Chelsea during the summer transfer window, netting twice.

Harry Maguire scored a brilliant header with just minutes remaining in the cost and nicked a point but the Red Devils certainly rode their luck.

After being two goals up, United should have ended their poor run of form but the defensive frailties cost them.

Man United vs FC Twente 1-1 UEFA Europa League

United began their Europa League campaign with a disappointing 1-1 draw at Old Trafford against Eredivisie side FC Twente, a team that ten Hag used to play for.

Christian Eriksen had fired United in front against the Dutch side with an unerring finish into the top corner before Sam Lammers fired in a second-half equaliser.

Man United vs Bayern Munich 0-1 UEFA Champions League

During the disastrous 2023/24 campaign, United finished off their Champions League group with a 1-0 home defeat to Bayern Munich at Old Trafford.

United needed to win against Thomas Tuchel’s side if they were to have any chance of progressing into the knockout stages but a Kingsley Coman goal, after a deft flick from Harry Kane, was enough to hand the victory to the German side.

Man United vs Galatasaray 3-3 UEFA Champions League

Whilst their 1-0 defeat to Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League ended any hope of knockout stage qualification, United’s 3-3 draw against Galatasaray really put the nail in the coffin.

Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes put United into a two-goal lead before a mini revival by Galatasaray was halted by Scott McTominay in the second half.

Two late goals meant the Red Devils had to settle for a draw which effectively ended their hopes.

Man United 1-0 Copenhagen UEFA Champions League

The only clean sheet United kept in their Champions League campaign was after a 1-0 win over Copenhagen thanks to a late Harry Maguire goal.

United almost had to settle for a draw after the Red Devils gave away a stoppage-time penalty but Andre Onana pulled off a superb penalty stop to preserve the points for United.

Copenhagen 4-3 Man United UEFA Champions League

There were many nadirs of the 2023/24 season but United’s 4-3 defeat to Copenhagen in Denmark was a real low.

Similar to the Galatasaray match, United raced into a comfortable lead through Rasmus Hojlund before Garnacho made it 2-0.

A rather harsh red card for Marcus Rashford swung the game and United would eventually lose late on to the Danish side in embarrassing circumstances.

Man United 2-3 Galatasaray October 2023 UEFA Champions League

Another defeat, another defeat after conceding more than three goals but this was the most hectic game at Old Trafford, and that’s saying something.

Hojlund had netted first but Wilfred Zaha equalised before Mauro Icardi scored a late winner to condemn United to another defeat.

Bayern Munich 4-3 Man United September 2023 UEFA Champions League

United began their 2023/24 Champions League campaign against Bayern at the Allianz Arena, after a good start the Red Devils’ defensive problems meant they suffered another damning defeat.

Despite Casemiro scoring twice late on, the damage had already been done by the then-Bundesliga champions.

This defeat to the German side proved to be a preview of what was to come as United conceded 15 goals in just six group-stage games.

Sevilla 3-0 Man United April 2023 UEFA Europa League

This game will always be remembered for David De Gea’s disastrous mistake which was duly punished by Sevilla as United crashed out to the Europa League specialists.

United came into this game off the back of a first-leg draw to the Spanish side but this defeat was amidst an injury crisis with Lisandro Martinez suffering an injury.

United were soundly beaten 3-0 by Sevilla and this will be a game that fans will want to forget in a hurry.

United’s 2-2 draw against Sevilla in the first leg of the Europa League quarter-final proved to be the game that derailed Ten Hag’s tenure at Old Trafford.

Liverpool’s 7-0 victory over United was damning but the injuries that the Red Devils suffered against Sevilla at Old Trafford proved to be a precursor as to what’s to come.

As well as this, prior to this draw against Sevilla, United’s record in Europe had been impressive, with a statement victory over Barcelona the highlight, but wins have been hard to come by since then.
