Fabrizio Romano has now offered a new update about Manchester United’s pursuit of Mason Mount after Chelsea rejected the Old Trafford team’s latest bid for his transfer.
The Red Devils have remained determined to seal a deal for the 24-year-old this summer as boss Erik ten Hag looks to bolster his midfield. But Romano now claims that Chelsea rejected Manchester United’s third offer for Mount’s transfer. It still fell shy of the Blues’ asking price.
Yet Stamford Bridge chiefs have given Manchester United some hope to believe a deal could soon be sealed. Chelsea also offered to meet their counterparts from Old Trafford in-person to solve Mount’s situation. The Blues also countered the Red Devils’ bid with their own offer.
What has Romano said about Manchester United’s pursuit of Mount?
According to Romano, Chelsea countered Manchester United’s third bid for Mount’s transfer by offering a £58m deal, plus £7m in add-ons. The Blues are appearing eager to get a move finalised with club chiefs from west London open to meeting to discuss an amicable solution.
Additionally, Romano adds that Mount will be clear once again to Chelsea of his longing for a transfer to Manchester United. The 36-cap England midfielder, who Joe Cole also called ‘outstanding’ in October 2021, will not sign a new contract and his priority is the Red Devils.
Mount will enter the final year of his £80k-a-week deal at Stamford Bridge on July 1. So, the Blues are in a rush to resolve his situation. They want to meet Manchester United next week to finalise his transfer. Mount reiterating that his plans are not to renew could help a move.
Further reports by The Telegraph also note Chelsea’s counter offer of £58m, plus £7m, after turning down Manchester United’s £50m, plus £5m, bid for Mount’s transfer. The Blues are still holding out for a £65m package for their academy product with 195 games for the club.
Chelsea star Mount has already agreed to a contract at Old Trafford
Manchester United will know they do not need to rush to accept Chelsea’s counter-offer for Mount’s transfer. The Blues are in the weaker position with the Portsmouth-born technician out of contract in 2024. He has also already agreed to a contract for a switch to Old Trafford.
That is according to the Daily Star, which reported earlier this week that Mount has agreed to personal terms with Manchester United ahead of any transfer from Chelsea. Ten Hag has pushed to seal a deal for the midfielder, who will earn £200k-a-week on a five-year contract.
