Man Utd told to hire Roy Keane on interim basis to help out Darren Fletcher, with one concern raised

Ruben Amorim has been fired at Manchester United, leaving the club with another interim scenario.

This time it is Darren Fletcher who will take temporary charge at Manchester United, stepping up from his role as under-18s coach.

Does Fletcher have enough sway and management nous to last beyond just one game in the dugout, and even until the end of the season?

One idea has been put forward that Fletcher could get a helping hand from a former teammate – Roy Keane.

The case for Roy Keane

Roy Keane has previous management experience at Sunderland and Ipswich Town, and is often linked to top jobs.

Despite this, the Irish legend appears more comfortable working as a television pundit.

Another Sky Sports analyst, Jamie O’Hara, told the channel that he believes Keane would be an ideal helping hand for Fletcher if he was asked.

He explained: “I don’t think he’d probably take too kindly to Jason Wilcox turning in what formation to play, but I think that someone like Roy Keane, for me, would be perfect to bring in, maybe as an interim.

“Bring him in to help the club, alongside Darren Fletcher, potentially, if he was going to wait till the end of the season, someone who knows what it means to be successful, someone who’s driven, ambitious, knows what it means to go and win, won’t take any rubbish.

“I think the fans will get behind a person like Roy Keane because, day in, day out, he’s gonna set standards, and the standards of what it is to be part of a Manchester United team.”

Keane call has merit

While O’Hara lacks the gravitas to get Ineos to take his suggestion seriously, bringing in Roy Keane would be a fascinating move.

Keane’s forceful personality means the players would not get an easy ride and be permitted to coast between now and May.

Could it also backfire? Sure. Ineos would likely be scared of making such a move, with O’Hara rightly questioning whether Keane would tolerate working within the club’s structure.

But there has to be a temptation, given what Keane managed to bring to the club in his playing days.

O’Hara added: “I think we’ve seen over the years that the standards of Manchester United have dropped.

“Someone like Roy Keane would be perfect to have in until the end of the season.

“In the team, in the dugout, part of the club, who knows what it means to be a top football club.

“We’ll see whether it happens or not. I doubt it, but I’ve always said they need people like working in at that club, leaders, proper, people who know what it means to be successful.”

Amorim was sacked with United lying in sixth place, level on points with Chelsea in fifth.
