Man Utd pull out of two youth competitions they have never won

Manchester United have made a strategic decision to pull out of two youth competitions for the forthcoming season to prioritise the development of their academy players.

Manchester United’s academy aims to develop young players to a level that allows them to compete in the professional game.

The best players who come through tend to get an opportunity in United’s first team, though not all. Many miss out on living that dream, even if they go on to achieve it elsewhere.

It is the coaches at Carrington who spend the most time with these prospects, trying to fine-tune their games for the senior level.

Man Utd will not compete in the EFL Trophy and National League Cup next season

One of the tasks United coaches face is trying to ensure each player gets enough games, but that also means managing game time for those playing in multiple age groups.

This has led to United making a strategic decision ahead of the new season.

According to BBC Sport, United have decided not to enter the EFL Trophy or National League Cup for the 2026/27 campaign.

The two main reasons for this include returning to the UEFA Youth League following the senior side’s qualification for the Champions League and running a slightly smaller than normal professional development phase group of players (U18s and U21s).

Interestingly, United have never won the EFL Trophy or National League Cup.

United entered the EFL Trophy for the first time in 2019.

The Reds failed to get out of the group stage last season, and they were eliminated from the league section of the National League Cup.

United will continue to play in the Premier League U21 International Cup after reaching the quarter-finals before losing to Real Madrid last season.

What are your expectations for Tyler Fletcher during the 2026/27 season?

Is he ready to contribute for Manchester United?

Adam Lawrence in talks to extend Man Utd stay

Adam Lawrence returned to United last season – following a brief stint at Newcastle – to coach the U21s.

A new coach was needed after Travis Binnion was promoted as first-team coach under Michael Carrick.

The report from the BBC claims talks are continuing with Lawrence to remain U21s manager for the new season.

It makes sense as Binnion was given a new deal to remain part of the coaching staff for the new season.
