Luke Shaw must accept smaller terms if the experienced left-back is to sign a new contract at Manchester United.
Although the 2025/26 campaign had its bumps as far as Manchester United are concerned, it was a campaign of significance for Luke Shaw.
The 31-year-old became only the fifth United player in the Premier League era to start in all 38 games in a single season.
That is an incredible achievement for Shaw given how unlucky he’s been with injuries down the years. The only real individual blow was his omission from the England squad for the 2026 World Cup.

Luke Shaw must take a pay cut for Man Utd stay
The harsh reality of Shaw’s career trajectory is that United have arrived at a defining juncture.
It’s a juncture where planning for a future left-back may become a priority, with a gruelling Champions League campaign looming alongside the domestic cups.
According to The Sun, Shaw will have to take a pay cut if he is to remain at Old Trafford beyond his current deal.
Shaw, who will turn 32 before the start of the 2027/28 season, could be joined by extra competition in the squad this summer amid links to Newcastle’s Lewis Hall.
The England defender currently earns £200,000-a-week, and United are not expected to offer the same salary.
Shaw is now entering the final year of his contract at United.
The report claims Shaw could strike an agreement over a similar deal to Harry Maguire’s, after the experienced centre-back announced his renewal in April following a strong end to the season.
Maguire was pocketing £200,000-a-week, but United’s Champions League qualification and additional clauses meant he would have been in line for a bigger package this season.

Man Utd could consider Harry Amass as Luke Shaw cover next season
With three years left to run on Hall’s contract at Newcastle, United may need to look elsewhere to consider giving Harry Amass a run in the first team as an understudy to Shaw.
Newcastle don’t want to lose Hall and have insisted he is not for sale, but we all know that money talks in the football world.
Amass must come into the equation this summer, regardless of whether a new left-back is signed because he’s been unlucky with injuries and is still thought highly of as a prospect with serious potential.
The United Academy star deserves his shot.
