Manchester United fans will have to become Portuguese football experts quickly as Ruben Amorim is set to join the club following Erik ten Hag.
Ruben Amorim has ‘verbally agreed’ to become Man Utd manager and that follows an extremely quick turn of events which saw Ten Hag sacked in the morning.
The Portuguese will be a known quantity to many in England, having had previous discussions with Liverpool and West Ham United for managerial vacancies.
However, for United fans, Amorim was always an outside and ambitious candidate so it speaks volumes about Ineos’ commitment that they made it happen.
By all accounts, United are getting a very special coach and everything can be learned about him by knowing about who his managerial idol is.

Ruben Amorim’s managerial idol
For a young and upcoming Portuguese manager, it is easy to assume that Jose Mourinho would be the man they look up to.
Mourinho broke through the glass ceiling for a generation of Portuguese coaches but United fans would be delighted that in Amorim’s case, the answer is not Mourinho.
The reason is that he always wants his teams to be known for their attacking guile and entertaining gameplay despite respecting Mourinho as a ‘leader’.
Amorim’s managerial idol, according to Guillem Balague for BBC, is Jorge Jesus, the Portugues coach who ruled the roost with SL Benfica and is now in Saudi Arabia.
Jesus won every domestic trophy there was to win during his time at SL Benfica and his team was a thrilling watch for their attacking football and determination to stick to their principles.
He’s currently replicating that ruthlessness with Al-Hilal in the Saudi Pro League, winning the league last season unbeaten, with 101 goals scored in 34 games, winning 31 and drawing three.
The BBC profile of his states that he is a big fan of Jesus’ defensive approach as well but like stated earlier, he wants his team to be ‘remembered for their attack’.
Five things he learned from Jorge Jesus
The profile states that Amorim has been hugely influenced by Jesus in five areas.
The most important of those was ‘the importance of the collective’ and ‘the importance of details’, which will be of crucial importance at Old Trafford since Erik ten Hag, for all his qualities, often struggled to rally the troops.
One trait which Amorim shares with Ten Hag, and probably every top manager needs to have is conviction in your ideas.
‘Working hard in training’ and ‘leading with authority’ round up the five things Amorim learned from Jesus which are again things that any manager needs to have.
The force of personality needs to be strong for a manager to sustain himself under the harsh lights of Old Trafford and all signs point towards Amorim having that sorted.
So highly does he judge himself that he offered to resign as Sporting manager when he came fourth in his third season, a far cry from Ten Hag who kept talking about the trophies he won at United and the process going places while the team struggled to win any game convincingly.
At 39, he can be the answer for the now as well as the future for United and Jorge Jesus being his idol is a cause enough to be excited about his arrival.
