Manchester United fans had a lot to say after England defender Luke Shaw notched up a new milestone in his playing career at Old Trafford.

Luke Shaw was limited to only 12 matches across all competitions for the Red Devils during the 2024-25 campaign after another injury-hit Manchester United season.

The 29-year-old England defender has often been labelled as one of the best left-backs in the world when he is in form and has not suffered a setback due to injuries.

However, Shaw’s injury record at United has left the Red Devils left-back with limited playing time at Old Trafford, despite managing to stay at the club over that period.

The England star has played 287 matches for the Red Devils over the course of his Old Trafford spell and Shaw has picked up 29 assists and scored four times.

Shaw, who is under contract with United until 2027, has lifted the League Cup and the FA Cup during his injury-hit career at the Premier League club.

Man Utd fans’ reaction to Luke Shaw’s latest feat at Old Trafford ahead of the 2025-26 Premier League campaign

Manchester United on Friday posted on social media that Luke Shaw has now been at Old Trafford for over a decade after marking the anniversary of his signing.

Some Red Devils supporters responded by admitting that his leg-break injury against PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League in 2015 “robbed him” of his potential.

One United fan said: “Seems like we’ve only seen him perform well in 11 matches. That injury was sad ‘cause he was destined for greatness. But right now, it’s not time to be sentimental, especially with the current state of the club. Luke Shaw should be one of the first players we sell if we’re serious.”

Another added: “One of the biggest ‘what ifs’ I’ve seen since I’ve been watching. That injury against PSV has robbed him and us of so much. Genuinely could have been a world-beater without the injury issues.”

Someone else commented: “This man should have been a Manchester United captain by now, but [injuries] just never let him, but then again, we can’t be so much against him. If we all remember, he was never like this until the [match] against PSV. He took that great setback playing for the club he loves. Respect [to him].”

“Part of the captains, he’s a world-class player destroyed by injury,” a fourth argued.

While a fifth Red Devils supporter tweeted: “He is one footballer that I am really sad didn’t hit the peak. Bursting [onto] the scene at 18, he became the best LB in the league in his debut season with Southampton. Destined to be the greatest LB football has ever seen.”

“Never thought he’d play again after that awful leg break,” another X user wrote.

And a seventh tweeted: “When fit, [an] absolute amazing player for this club.”

Man Utd fans couldn’t be clearer about what happens next with Luke Shaw at Old Trafford

Shaw first arrived at Old Trafford under ex-United manager Louis van Gaal after the Red Devils signed him from Southampton in 2014 when he was only 18 years old.

However, some United fans felt that Shaw has been at the Premier League club for too long amid his ongoing injuries and believe it is time for him to be sold.

“There is absolutely NO [sic] reason why Luke Shaw should still be a Manchester United player in 2025,” one Red Devils supporter wrote.

Somebody else commented: “And it has been a nightmare since then. I don’t know why you [decided] to release [Christian] Eriksen but keep Shaw.”

Another suggested: “What is he still doing at Man UTD [sic]?”

“It’s time he leaves the club,” a fourth X user posted.

While a fifth added: “Imagine if he had been fit for most of the time.”

One United fan simply said: “Injury prone.”

And a sixth tweeted: “Now sell him, he [is] still worth some change.”

Shaw was once the world’s most expensive teenager after United paid Southampton a £27m transfer fee for the Three Lions international more than a decade ago.
