Manchester United are set up to be among the real winners in the Premier League this weekend – unless there is an unwelcome sting in the tail.

Playing on a Monday night at this stage of the season can present some challenges, because if our rivals all won, it would have increased the pressure. For instance, an Aston Villa victory would have knocked us down to fourth.
Instead, results have largely gone in our favour, and Manchester United remain in third place without even playing a game.

While Liverpool did record a 2-0 win over Fulham, they were the only side placed between fourth and eighth to register a victory.
Chelsea lost 3-0 at home to City, while Aston Villa could only manage a 1-1 draw away at Nottingham Forest.
Among the chasing pack, Everton and Brentford played out a 2-2 draw, while Newcastle’s hopes of a late run are over after a 2-1 defeat at Crystal Palace.
Manchester United remain in third place, ahead of Aston Villa with a superior goal difference of eight goals.

- Manchester United can go three points clear of Aston Villa, with the goal difference tie-breaker too.
- Manchester United will be six points clear of Liverpool. We host them at Old Trafford in early May.
- Manchester United will be 10 points ahead of Chelsea in sixth place. We could extend this to 13 with a win at Stamford Bridge next weekend.
With the top five places qualifying for the Champions League, Manchester United will still be heavily favoured even with a defeat to Leeds.
But that’s not what we want, or expect.
A victory will put us in a truly commanding position, heading into the game away at Chelsea next weekend.
