Manchester United are set to trigger contract extensions in two of their first-team players but are unsure whether to with a third, whose future at the club is seemingly in doubt.

When Manchester United sign players they tend to include an optional extra year on their deals so it gives the club time and wiggle room before handing out new contracts.

Victor Lindelof and Aaron Wan-Bissaka both see their contracts expire this summer but with an option for a further year and the club are set to trigger these options according to ESPN.

Wan-Bissaka, in particular, has done well under Erik Ten Hag and was the first-choice option at right-back before he suffered a hamstring injury last month.

Martial’s future

One player, whose future is seemingly less certain, is French forward Anthony Martial.

The former AS Monaco man has seen his game time limited due to the exciting start made by Rasmus Hojlund.

The report states that United are taking their time over the future of the 27-year-old and are wondering whether the time is now to allow the forward to move on.

He is also fighting for his future at the club and his performances from now until the end of the season are set to determine whether his future is at Old Trafford or somewhere else.

He reportedly turned down a chance to join the Saudi Pro League this summer, according to the same report.

United’s extension decisions

The Red Devils have handed out some questionable contract extensions over the last few years.

Martial’s £250,000-a-week contract, according to Sky Sports, has certainly been a questionable contract extension.

The French forward has struggled with injuries and seemingly can’t keep fit and the frustration for United is that when Martial does play, which is rare, he shows glimpses of quality.

However, if the Frenchman can’t keep fit then there is no point holding onto the 27-year-old and a move away would suit both parties.
