Man United set sights on versatile Italian defender, he’s available for £25 million

Manchester United have set their sights on Torino defender Alessandro Buongiorno, according to reports.

It’s no secret that Erik ten Hag and Manchester United are keen on signing a new centre-back in the summer as there are question marks around almost every one of their current options.

Lisandro Martinez is only recently back from injury and it is unclear how he will cope after surgery, Raphael Varane has been in and out of the side but has won his place back in recent weeks.

Harry Maguire has been brilliant but remains injured and Victor Lindelof is also unavailable. A new defender will surely be one of the club’s top targets and it looks as if another name has been linked with Old Trafford.

Buongiorno linked

According to a report from Football Transfers, United are keen on the Torino defender with the report stating that his performances in Serie A have turned heads and a deal can be done for around just €30 million (£25 million).

The comparatively low valuation of the player, compared to other targets like Jarrad Branthwaite and Benfica’s Antonio Silva, means he could act as a fill-in at Old Trafford this season, given his ability to play across the defence, including left-back.

United may face competition from AC Milan with the Italian side also keen on Buongiorno and preliminary discussions are thought to be underway with the Serie A giants and his current club Torino.

His contract at the Serie A club expires in 2028 but his current club are willing to listen to offers in the winter window for the Italian defender, 24.

Who is Buongiorno?

Buongiorno rose through the ranks of the Torino youth league, contributing to their success in clinching the Coppa Italia Primavera during the 2017–18 season. He then joined the first team in, 2018, signing a four-year deal.

Since then, there hasn’t been much to shout about in relation to the Italian defender but this season, the Torino ace has really kicked on and he could be an interesting option for the Red Devils.

Having that versatile utility option could be a nice addition to a back line that has struggled with injuries this season and the longest injury that the Italian defender has had in his career has been a month lay-off.
