Manchester United reportedly pivoted from one of Jose Mourinho’s signing suggestions in 2017 because the player wasn’t commercially viable, according to reports.
Jose Mourinho may well have been one of the more successful Manchester United managers at the club following Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement from Old Trafford in the summer of 2013.
The Portuguese boss moved to Old Trafford in 2016 after being sacked by Chelsea and won a Europa League and a Carabao Cup in his first season at the club which meant qualification to the Champions League.
However, the following summer was one of frustration with an attempt to sign Inter Milan winger Ivan Perisic failing to materialise, it has now been revealed why that was the case.
Why the Perisic deal fell through
The two sides were seemingly haggling over the final £5 million for the Croatian winger with Inter Milan’s money troubles meaning the Red Devils believed they could sign the winger for a decent price, somewhere around the £40 million mark, according to The Guardian.
However, this deal failed to materialse and now a damning report from ESPN about the much-maligned Glazer family has explained the reason behind why this deal fell through.
“Jose Mourinho wanted to sign [winger] Ivan Perisic from Inter Milan in 2017, but was told by Ed that, as a player, he wasn’t commercially viable,” a former United player reportedly said in the report.
Ed Woodward, who was the club’s chief executive during this pursuit of the Croatian winger, denied this story in the report and said: “that (his commercial value) was never a consideration.”
Ironically, Perisic went on to have a superb year as he, alongside his Croatian teammates, got to a World Cup final and he hetted in the showpiece game against France in a 4-2 defeat.
Mourinho and Martial
The signing of Perisic was viewed as the replacement for Anthony Martial as the French winger didn’t see eye to eye with Mourinho during his time at the club.
ESPN’s report quoted this same former player about the Martial situation, he said: “After that World Cup, Jose told Ed and the Glazers that he wanted to get rid of Anthony Martial, that he was neither good enough nor reliable enough. That was vetoed by the Glazers, Joel was a big fan of Martial [as a player].”
Whether this is true or not, seemingly the club denies that it is true, it is certainly a damning indictment of the Glazers’ time at Old Trafford. Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos’ revolution at the club can’t come soon enough.
