Diogo Dalot has been named in the BBC team of the week after his stunning goal from outside the box won the Red Devils the game against Sheffield United.

The Manchester United right-back has had a renaissance of sorts after it had seemed that Aaron Wan-Bissaka was Erik ten Hag’s first choice going into the new season.

Well, after the Englishman suffered a hamstring injury, Diogo Dalot has taken his chance in the side and is surely now the undisputed first-choice right-back for the Reds.

The Portuguese capped off his fine form as it was his curling effort from outside of the box that was too hot to handle for Wes Foderingham, which ultimately won United the game.

Crooks on Dalot’s performance

BBC Sport’s Garth Crooks decided that the former FC Porto right-back had to be in his team of the week and has been full of praise for the Portuguese defender.

“What a strike by the Manchester United defender,” Crooks enthused. “The two-touch finish was as clean as I have seen from a full-back.

“Manchester United continue to splutter their way through the season, picking up points here and there without playing anything like the football their fans expect. Come to think of it they haven’t done that for some time.”

Dalot’s impact

The Portuguese defender moved over to left-back in September and did a stellar job up against Arsenal’s star man Bukayo Saka, despite the 3-1 defeat United suffered to the Gunners.

The right-back has featured in 11 games so far this season in all competitions and has markedly improved his defensive application and hasn’t allowed wingers to beat him with as much regularity as he has done in previous seasons, Arnaut Danjuma springs to mind, back when the Dutchman was at Villarreal.

Dalot will be crucial for United going forward as he bids to form a partnership with winger Antony.
