Man United could be set for money to help in the transfer market if new Premier League rule is passed

Manchester United could be set for a large financial windfall if the Premier League agree to make one rule change, according to reports.

It’s no secret that Manchester United are struggling with finances as the Glazer family’s greed continues to make the Red Devils struggle on and off the pitch.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s potential purchase of the club is surely set to help the club financially as the 71-year-old, alongside Ineos as a company, is one of the richest in the United Kingdom.

With the Glazers still calling the shots, however, money will still be tight but a new rule from the Premier League could help the club.

United’s financial windfall

According to a report from The Telegraph, the Premier League is in the process of introducing a new way of allocating prize money to its clubs. Currently, the ratio in which the money is divided stands at 1.6:1.

That means, last year Manchester City, who won the Premier League title for the third season in a row, took home nearly £161 million while bottom club Southampton made £100 million by being in the Premier League.

The new ratio, however, if the Premier League passes the rule, would be 1.8:1, this would mean City would get £181 million, a £20 million increase.

For United, who finished third last season, the Red Devils would stand to earn more money than they did last season with these new rules in place.

United’s spending power

This could mean the Red Devils would have more scope in the future to be able to spend more money but this would, understandably, irk the rest of the Premier League.

The precise amount coming in would depend on performance, and United’s final league position each season. But will be an increase on the current income, wherever the team finish.

The money that comes in could help the Red Devils in the transfer market next summer, although the hope would be that Ineos would be able to assist by then.

For now, though, this new rule would give the Red Devils more money as long as they continue to climb up the Premier League table under Erik ten Hag after a slow start to the season.
