Man United attacker who is averaging just one goal every 523 minutes told to calm ego

Manchester United have many problems to solve including working out how to get the best out of their misfiring attackers.

Ruben Amorim was hired for his work in Portugal. Sporting Lisbon played some breathtaking football. Sadly, the same cannot be said for United since the 39-year-old took charge.

The Red Devils have won just three league games since Amorim arrived two-and-a-half months ago. The side sits 13th in the table, just 10 points from the relegation zone.

Now under huge pressure to get the side performing, Amorim must find a way to start picking up points.

To do that, though, the United manager must first get his forwards firing on all cylinders, and one striker, in particular, has been told to up his game.

Rasmus Hojlund told to calm ego

Like most of the United first team, Rasmus Hojlund has disappointed this season.

The Denmark international has failed to impress and, despite starting half of his side’s Premier League games, is averaging just one goal every 523 minutes.

Numbers way short of what was expected of him when he was signed from Atalanta for £72 million 18 months ago.

Paul Scholes recently criticised Hojlund for his lacklustre showing against Southampton in a game United were lucky to win.

In fact, Hojlund’s last goal came during a 2-1 win over Viktoria Plzen in the Europa League nearly six weeks ago, and former player Robbie Earle thinks the 20-year-old’s problem is believing he is better than he is.

“A few [players] maybe think they are stars — Rasmus Hojlund has so disappointed me in recent weeks,” he said on The 2 Robbies Podcast.

“I think he’s talented, I think he’s got potential, he’s got pace, but he ain’t the star, and by the way, he needs to work at his craft.”

Although Earle’s criticism is just, it’s worth remembering how difficult this season has been for United’s number nine.

Big improvement needed

Not only has Hojlund been a victim of squad rotation, but the manager who signed him; Erik ten Hag; has been replaced.

Pressure to lead United’s line is massive at the best of times, but arriving in England with such a large price tag has only added to the forward’s demands.

It goes without saying that Hojlund needs to improve his output, as well as his overall game, but he’s still young, and as Earle also pointed out, has huge potential.

Given the fact he hasn’t been at the club for two years yet, it’s worth fans sticking with him for now.

More game time should lead to greater consistency and an overall improvement in performance.
