Luke Shaw’s injury scare puts new personal record in doubt

Manchester United have been dealt an injury scare after Luke Shaw was substituted off against Brentford.

There is no denying that Luke Shaw has had one of his best seasons in recent years, especially in terms of availability.

Shaw was a trusted figure under Ruben Amorim after proving himself more than capable of playing in a back-three system. However, the England international has looked even better as a left back under Michael Carrick.

Unfortunately, Shaw’s night ended prematurely on Monday, when an injury forced him off with 20 minutes to go as United beat Brentford 2-1 at Old Trafford.

Luke Shaw at risk of missing out on personal record

Shaw, like any player in the squad, will be aiming to finish the season as strongly as possible.

The 30-year-old looked like he was coming to the end of his United career last year, especially after many major injury problems, but Shaw has transformed himself by becoming one of the most consistent performers in recent months.

Shaw is chasing a personal record at United by starting in every Premier League match this season. He made just seven appearances in the league in 2024/25.

To achieve that feat – for the first time in his career – with four games remaining in 2025/26, Shaw needs to recover quickly from his recent setback to start the remaining matches.

Shaw hobbled off slowly without assistance after being treated by a physio. When speaking to medics as he sat on the Old Trafford turf, he did so through his shirt, making it impossible to lip-read.

No update on Shaw was given in the hours that followed the match, but they will likely begin running tests on the extent of the setback this morning.

Shaw would be a huge loss for the game against Liverpool on Sunday if he doesn’t pass fit.

Carrick is expected to provide an update on Shaw at his next press conference later this week.

Injury won’t help Luke Shaw’s World Cup chances

Shaw’s chances of making the England squad for the World Cup are slim.

He has yet to make a squad under Thomas Tuchel since he took over the team.

Shaw’s form at United may warrant a place in the World Cup squad, but the recent injury setback doesn’t come at a good time and will help Tuchel stick with younger options at left-back.

It may even be best for Shaw to use the summer to rest up, especially if he wants to be playing regularly in the Champions League next season.
