Harry Maguire‘s form nightmare continued for England after he was partly responsible for two goals conceded.
Maguire gave away a penalty for Germany’s opener with a clear foul on Jamal Musiala, after he had given the ball away to him.
He then lost the ball in Germany’s half, leading to them going up to score on the counter-attack.
This was not the performance Harry Maguire needed to quell his doubters, and will only see the criticism grow louder.
Maguire was looking for this international break to turn around his club fortunes, where he is not part of Manchester United’s first team, losing his place for the first time since his £80 million move in 2019.
This performance, following on from a defeat to Italy last week, certainly has not helped.
Maguire’s poor display was preceded by boos from England fans when his name was read out at Wembley before the game. This won’t have helped his confidence at all.
However, his defending was particularly amateurish for the first goal in particular, and will make the fans who booed him even more convinced they were right to vent their frustrations in his direction.
Shaw scores for England
It wasn’t all bad news for England or for Manchester United, thanks to an impressive performance from Luke Shaw.
Shaw scored for England, netting the goal which inspired a comeback, making the scoreline 2-1 after Maguire’s double error.
England then scored through a Mason Mount equaliser and Harry Kane penalty to come back and improbably lead game 3-2, after looking like being on the way to a depressing pre-World Cup defeat.
Germany did score an equaliser to draw 3-3 after a goalkeeping error from Nick Pope, stopping the Three Lions celebrations in their tracks.
Luke Shaw can be proud of his contribution, he was making his first start for club or country since Manchester United’s defeat to Brentford in August.
He featured at wing-back with England playing three at the back, giving him more license to get forward, and he made the most of it, getting into the box and taking his chance.
Shaw also produced an excellent first half pass which cut through the Germany defence and should have led to a goal, but England could not take advantage.
Of the two United players, Shaw comes out with a better chance of getting back into the club team, but his goal helpd to do Maguire a favour. If England had lost this game, the criticism of Maguire would have been far more severe.
