Luke Shaw is badly mistaken if he thinks Manchester United fans have any sympathy for him being unhappy

“It’s always important to feel like you’re wanted and I think especially here with England, I always feel that. I’m not saying I don’t at Manchester United, but here [with England], the way things are, I feel wanted and I enjoy my football.”

Luke Shaw was quick to insist these post match comments to Sky Sports were not a dig at life at United. But quite clearly they are reflective of an unhappy camp.

The left-back has been in and out of the side this season, losing his place as a regular, splitting time with Alex Telles.
Telles has not been particularly outstanding, and nor has he needed to be to keep Shaw out of the side.

Along with Harry Maguire, Shaw has been one of United’s most disappointing players in 2021/22. His dip in form after his Euro 2020 heroics was perhaps inevitable, but almost a year on from the tournament it is no longer justifiable.

A year ago Shaw won United’s player of the month award for March. He hasn’t been in contention for any of the monthly honours this season.

The last time whoscored.com graded his performance above 7.5 this season was October, away at Tottenham.

Fans don’t want to hear it

Clearly life at United is not great right now, it has been a truly horrific season. But Shaw is badly mistaken if he believes supporters have any sympathy.

The spotlight is on the players now, and if they don’t get a grip, then it won’t be long until they throw the next manager under the bus too.

Fans are hurting right now and the last thing we want to hear are whining comments like Shaw’s.

It’s time the players show some pride, stop moaning, and show some pride on the pitch. It has happened on occasions this season, the recent home win versus Tottenham for instance, but far too irregularly.

If United are going to finish in the top four, the team needs to be consistent. 

The onus is on the players, and if Shaw wants to feel ‘wanted’ by fans, interim boss Ralf Rangnick, and the next boss, then he needs to start with his own performances.
