Dermot Gallagher and Sky Sports pundit Jay Bothroyd did not see eye to eye on the Luke Shaw and Brian Brobbey incident from Manchester United’s draw against Sunderland.

Sunderland and Manchester United played out a lacklustre 0-0 scoreline on Saturday afternoon, but the Premier League match was not without its drama on the day.

Black Cats supporters at the Stadium of Light felt that Sunderland should have had a penalty against United late in the second half after Luke Shaw’s altercation.

Shaw and Brian Brobbey were entangled in the United box in the 83rd minute and the Red Devils star was accused of bringing the Sunderland striker down.

Dermot Gallagher breaks down ‘tough call’ over Luke Shaw and Brian Brobbey incident in the Man Utd match

Stuart Attwell dismissed Sunderland’s penalty appeal and awarded Manchester United a free-kick after Luke Shaw’s rugby-like tussle with Brian Brobbey.

Shaw escaped punishment for the challenge and VAR did not intervene and summon Premier League referee Stuart Attwell to review the initial decision again.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Ref Watch, Dermot Gallagher argued that Attwell made the right call to penalise Brobbey for the altercation involving Man Utd star Shaw.

“This is a tough call,” he said.

“When you see the first image, Brobbey grabs him first and that is what pulls Shaw [around], who ends up not facing the ball.

“So, the argument is he is not looking at the ball, he should not be looking at the ball, he is engaging the player, but he has actually been dragged into that position.

“So, I think Stuart is right, it is definitely a foul by Brobbey.”

Jay Bothroyd disagrees with Dermot Gallagher backing Stuart Attwell’s referee call in the Man Utd vs Sunderland match

United settled for a point on their visit to the Stadium of Light at the weekend and the Red Devils remain in control of finishing third in the Premier League table.

Pundit Jay Bothroyd claimed that Stuart Attwell made the “wrong decision” in the Shaw and Brobbey battle in United’s 0-0 Premier League draw with Sunderland.

“I am looking at it from a forward’s point of view, Brobbey is turning to try to look where he is going and then it becomes a point where Shaw is not looking at the ball and you will probably say well that is because Brobbey is holding him, but Shaw is holding him as well,” he explained.

“If they are both being fair, Shaw is not going to beat Brobbey in a physical duel, so he has to do everything he can to stop him getting to the ball and I think that is the wrong decision and Brobbey should have been given the benefit of the doubt.”

United will play their final Premier League match at Old Trafford in the 2025-26 campaign on Sunday afternoon, with the Red Devils hosting Nottingham Forest.
