Luke Shaw accepts Ten Hag decision to drop him and admits he has not been good enough this season

Luke Shaw has been dropped by Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag after his early-season performances.

Ten Hag rung the changes after the 4-0 drubbing at Brentford and Shaw was one of the main fall guys, with new-boy Tyrell Malacia coming into the team and impressing.

Despite his lack of gametime, Shaw was called into the most recent England squad and played 90 minutes at left wing-back in the 3-3 draw with Germany at Wembley last night.

Shaw scored the goal which got England back into the game, and told TalkSPORT after the match he knows he has not been good enough this term.

Shaw said: “I think Ten Hag, the boss, he knows my qualities, he knows what I’m capable of and we’ve had chats. 

“It’s understandable that, and I even agree, the start of the season wasn’t good enough and he had to make changes and I fully accept that, I accepted it.

“The only thing I can do is train hard and wait for my opportunities, whether that’s in the cup games or the Premier League.

“Whatever I play in I just have to be ready and play at the standard I should be at.”

Shaw shone at Euro 2020 but has not rediscovered his best form since then and as he admits, he cannot have too many complaints about Ten Hag’s decision to drop him.

Malacia has come into the team and offered pace, dynamism and battling qualities, making it a tough ask for Shaw to get back into the team.

It seems he has Gareth Southgate’s faith for England regardless, and a lack of plausible alternatives as natural left-footed options in defence also helps his cause.

He will be looking to get more gametime ahead of the World Cup, to make his England place absolutely safe, and it remains to be seen how much Ten Hag includes him in the fold.
