Manchester United have a lot of talented youngsters on their books. But the same names come up time and again.
This week, another one made headlines when he reportedly earned a contract extension at Old Trafford (Manchester Evening News).
Luca Ercolani may already be 20, but he has a very good reason for failing to break through in the same way as some of his U23 teammates.
The Italian ruptured his cruciate ligament in mid-September and has been out of action ever since. Prior to that, he underwent foot surgery. In short, the centre-back has not had the best of luck in recent times.
Yet, despite hardly featuring this season, the Italian has been kept on. And that speaks volumes for both his talent and his attitude.
United clearly rate the defender, who was featuring regularly for the second string before his latest setback.
Shortly after that injury, Ercolani took to social media, as reported by the MEN. And his message shows the mindset that will have impressed the United hierarchy.
“The beginning of new beginnings; I will never give up,” he wrote.
It would have been easy for the United prospect’s head to drop after fighting back once only to be knocked down again. Instead, he stayed positive and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be pleased with his attitude as much as his skills.
The Italy U20 international has a big challenge to break into the first-team. He also has the likes of Axel Tuanzebe and Tendi Mengi ahead of him in the pecking order.
But, with a contract extension secured, Ercolani will be focused on getting fit and making up for lost time.
