Lisandro Martinez wins Manchester United Player of the Month for August

Lisandro Martinez has won the Manchester United Player of the Month award for August.

Martinez did not have much of a pre-season in a red shirt due to the delay over his move and was thrown into the fray against Brighton on the opening weekend of the term.

That 2-1 loss and the subsequent team aberration at Brentford the following week had too many critics scrambling to write him off, including Jamie Carragher.

But the game against Liverpool at Old Trafford was ideal for him to get his teeth into, and he played a starring role in that 2-1 win.

That has been followed up by helping United to a first clean sheet of the season in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Southampton.

Lisandro’s better performances have come alongside Raphael Varane, who was also nominated for the monthly crown despite playing just two games.

Fellow summer signing Tyrell Malacia rounded off the shortlist of three, but it was Martinez who scooped the crown.

Perhaps the fans voting wanted to show their support for Martinez after he was criticised too heavily after just two games in English football.

BBC Sport pundit Garth Crooks can be added to the list of pundits who Martinez has won over and he has now named him in his team of the week twice running.

Lisandro will know that at a club like United, there is a lot of noise from outside on a weekly basis and he cannot really listen to all of it.

This award has come from the club’s fans and he will know what he needs to do to keep performing at his current level and help the team keep on improving.

He has now been joined at Old Trafford by a former Ajax teammate in the shape of Antony and hopefully they can both help each other settle in.
