Lisandro Martinez produces dominant display in 1-1 draw against Chelsea

Despite losing his influential centre-back partner Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez impressed once again in Manchester United’s 1-1 draw against Chelsea.

Prior to last night’s draw at Stamford Bridge, the Argentine’s last appearance against the Blues saw him partner Donny van de Beek in midfield, in an eight-goal thriller that finished 4-4.

But unlike three years ago, there was no way Erik ten Hag was going to consider starting United’s number six in midfield against Graham Potter’s men.

The 24-year-old has started every single Premier League game since reuniting with his former Ajax boss at Old Trafford.

Tasked with facing the pacey Raheem Sterling and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Martinez was once again at his dominant and aggressive best.

After seeing Varane in tears following his withdrawal on the hour mark, Martinez was undeterred by the Frenchman being replaced by Victor Lindelof.

Martinez’s passion was clear to see when Casemiro scored a last-gasp header – the Argentine was seen celebrating wildly with United supporters after we ensured we came away from west London with a point.

It doesn’t require a lot to get the nine-time Argentina international pumped up, but it’s clear that the South American relishes playing in the big games, and he elevates his level.

Fresh after dominating Heung-Min Son and Harry Kane against Tottenham Hotspur, Martinez was at his authoritative best against another of the league’s top sides.

No player from either team registered more tackles (5) or clearances (7) than Martinez, reports WhoScored.

As well as having 68 touches and finishing the match with 88%pass accuracy, Martinez won seven duels and made one interception.

With Varane potentially not featuring again until after the World Cup, Manchester United need our rock-solid Argentine to marshal our backline and to continue to get us on the front foot.
