Martinez and Alvarez featured in both of Argentina’s international friendlies, which were played in the United States of America last month.

Lionel Scaloni’s La Albiceleste beat both Honduras and Jamaica 3-0, and the two-time World Cup winners look to be in a strong position heading into the 2022 World Cup, which kicks off next month in Qatar.

Martinez played the entire game against Honduras but only played 12 minutes against Jamaica.

Whereas Alvarez came off the bench at half-time against Honduras and he also opened the scoring against Jamaica.

The former River Plate striker, who was signed by the Citizens in January, has scored three goals in eight appearances since making the switch to England, having spent the end of last season on loan at his former club.

Speaking in a press conference, former interim boss Ralf Rangnick named Alvarez as one of three forwards he wanted to sign in January, along with Dusan Vlahovic and Luiz Diaz.

But United did not provide any funds to the German and it was Manchester City who snapped up the South American instead.

Alvarez and Martinez will put their international allegiance to one side when they square off at the Etihad.

City’s number 19 revealed that they had been talking about the derby on their flight back to Manchester.

“Yes, we travelled together on the return to Manchester,” Alvarez added.

“We were talking and making some jokes about the game on Sunday, but hey, always wishing each other the best and to have a great game.”
