Lewandowski swap deal could scupper Manchester United move for Frenkie de Jong

Manchester United appear to have hit a brick wall in pursuit of Netherlands midfielder Frenkie de Jong.

After Gerard Romero suggested a deal was ‘95 per cent done‘, United have failed to win over the midfielder so far, who has always insisted he wants to stay at Barcelona.

Fabrizio Romano told Five De Jong wants to play in the Champions League, an option United cannot offer. Other interested clubs can.

Ominously, Bayern Munich have now been linked with a move for De Jong, and hold an ace in the pack which could scupper Manchester United’s chances.

Lewandowski swap deal an option

Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo report Bayern Munich are keen on De Jong, and could work out a swap deal for Robert Lewandowski.

Lewandowski is keen to push through a move to Barcelona, but the Spanish side have not yet submitted a bid which is acceptable to Bayern.

A Lewandowski swap deal would leave both clubs as winners, give De Jong the Champions League football he desires, and Manchester United missing out.

Mundo Deportivo report: “The Bavarian club is interested in Frenkie, whom they know perfectly well from his brilliant time at Ajax. His technical and physical ability make him very attractive for Bayern.

“Sources from the culé club admit that if it were necessary to sacrifice Frenkie de Jong in order to tie up Lewandowski , it would have to be considered.”

Bayern are set to sign Ryan Gravenberch from Ajax, and the chance to link up with another Netherlands international could also be attractive.

United ‘ultimatum’

Manchester United cannot wait all summer for Frenkie de Jong to make up his mind, nor do the club intend to.

Spanish newspaper Sport report Manchester United have given De Jong an ‘ultimatum’ to make his final decision on a potential move.

If De Jong gives Manchester United a ‘definitive no’ then the Red Devils will move on and concentrate efforts elsewhere in pursuit of a midfielder.

This might be for the best, as there are several pro’s and con’s to signing De Jong, rather than the Dutchman being a perfect fit for the club’s needs.

The prospect of a potential move to Bayern may end up hastening De Jong’s answer to officially turn United down.
