La Liga expert says 'amazing' Frenkie de Jong will eventually join Manchester United

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has thrown fresh doubt over Frenkie de Jong’s potential move to Manchester United.

Quoted by Sky Sports, Laporta insisted Barcelona would like to keep the midfielder, stating: “Unless we feel the need or the interest to sell him we won’t do it. Frenkie de Jong isn’t for sale. We know he has offers. And if at a given moment we are interested in selling him then we would think about it.

“But right now we won’t sell him. Even more, we are acquiring another Franck. Franck Kessie.”

However, Barcelona have been negotiating with Manchester United for two months, and would not have been doing so if they were not interested in a sale. ESPN has reported United have a principle agreement with Barcelona over a move.

‘De Jong will eventually join Manchester United’

Sky Sports’ La Liga expert Alvaro Montero believes a deal for De Jong will eventually get done. He says the delays are down to the player, rather than the clubs.

Montero explained: “I do think he will eventually join United, but the main problem is the player. De Jong wants to stay at Barcelona but the club sees with fresh eyes the possibility of selling him.

“They acknowledge that doing so will bring in a lot of money, and looking at the squad he is someone who can perhaps attract one of the biggest fees in the current market.

“De Jong is an amazing player but if Barcelona sell him, it would be a good operation. His value means they are taking the positives from a bad situation.”

Marca report De Jong is owed substantial money by Barcelona after deferring his wages during the pandemic. He does not want to leave without an agreement to get what he is owed.

United wanted this deal done in time for pre-season tour. This clearly won’t be the case, and it could drag on for at least another week.

At some stage, there has to be a cut-off, for De Jong, United, and Barcelona. Erik ten Hag will want alternatives to be lined up. United’s season kicks off in precisely one month.

We cling onto the hope De Jong will eventually join United and be worth the wait. Right now, the stand-off is becoming a big frustration for all concerned.
