Konrad Laimer admits he could leave RB Leipzig with Manchester United one of three clubs said to be interested

Amid Manchester United transfer target Frenkie de Jong’s reluctance to leave Barcelona, a smarter move would be to look at players who are prepared to move on.

One of these is RB Leipzig midfielder Konrad Laimer, who would cost around a third of the price of De Jong, because his contract has just one year left to run.

Speaking while on international duty, the midfielder is prepared to make a transfer this summer.

Austrian outlet Der Standard report Laimer says it is “quite possible that I won’t play in Leipzig next season.”

Laimer admits he could leave

Laimer’s words admitting he could leave were also reported by German channel Sport1, which credits interest from Manchester United, although claims Bayern Munich to be frontrunners.

The report states: “According to SPORT1 information, the German record champion is also preparing an offer – Borussia Dortmund and Manchester United are also interested.”

Bayern have to be considered favourites, given their record of hoovering up talent from other Bundesliga clubs.

Focus.de recently reported RB Leipzig would prefer to receive an offer from Manchester United, than sell to a rival.

Ultimately though, it could be Laimer who determines his future and picks his next destination.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of the Europa League semi-final last month, Laimer was quoted by The MEN, saying he wants to choose his next club carefully.

Laimer said: “I’ll be 25 in May and have enough experience to make such decisions clearly. I need a good feeling. I have to like what people tell me.

“It’s about the plan with me and with the team. Of course, it’s also about goals. If I’m convinced of that, I’ll do it.”

This is where Bayern have a clear advantage, thanks to Laimer’s former RB Leipzig manager, Julian Nagelsmann, the current boss of the Bundesliga champions.

Sport1 report he wants to sign a ‘pressing machine’ with Laimer viewed as fitting the bill.

The outlet reports that Laimer would cost around £20 million, a bargain price for the all-action central midfielder.

FBRef data shows Laimer ranks in the top 1 per cent of players for pressures, and successful pressures, of midfielders in Europe’s top five leagues this season.

This is a deal we would expect Bayern to do, despite already signing Ryan Gravenberch, because they are a smartly run club who know how to identify and strike a bargain.

Manchester United are yet to convince us of that. Unless the De Jong chase is all a smokescreen, it still seems like the Red Devils are chasing big names who need to be persuaded to join, repeating old mistakes, rather than snapping up attainable, talented and affordable players like Laimer.

United’s reported interest is somewhat encouraging, but this is the time where action is needed, with the next step required to actually sign the player.
