Kobbie Mainoo’s response to his recent prominence in the Manchester United first team has surprised those at the Old Trafford club, according to reports.

Erik ten Hag decided that teenage midfielder Kobbie Mainoo was to be the next cab off the ranks at Old Trafford following Alejandro Garnacho’s emergence in the first team last season.

Mainoo has started three Premier League away games at St James’ Park, Goodison Park and Anfield and the 18-year-old has looked the best midfielder on the pitch in pretty much every one of these games.

At just 18 years of age, the future is an exciting one and fans are already beginning to get carried away over the midfielder.

Mainoo’s reaction

One man who is not getting carried away is Mainoo himself, with a report from the Manchester Evening News stating that the teenage midfielder has remained as calm as ever despite his prominence in the first-team setup.

This has naturally led to surprise from some quarters of Old Trafford with the midfielder reportedly keeping his feet so firmly on the ground that some have never seen a teenager remain so calm despite all the excitement and talk about just how good he could be.

The club are also holding him from doing any external media activities, similar to how Sir Alex Ferguson nurtured Ryan Giggs into the first team during his breakthrough back in the 1990s.

Mainoo does not park where the first-team players park at Carrington which just highlights how composed he is about his breakthrough into Ten Hag’s plans.

Ten Hag’s Mainoo plan

The English midfielder was accosted by Ten Hag after the Carabao Cup victory against Newcastle United in February and the pair had a nice chat during the celebrations.

Since then, fans have wondered when the Dutchman would unleash the midfielder and he featured prominently during pre-season before his unfortunate injury against Real Madrid.

He only returned in November but the Englishman has been United’s best midfielder, which is a sad indictment of where the Red Devils currently are with their options in the engine room.

Mainoo is the future of the Red Devils midfield and the club are doing a good job of keeping his feet firmly on the ground.
