Manchester United defender Raphael Varane stepped up when the team needed him in the second half to score a winner against Wolves.
World Cup winner Raphael Varane was the unlikely goalscorer to win Manchester United the game against Wolves.
His second half header made up for a miss in the first half, and saw United begin the season with all three points.
It was not a great performance, but after beginning last season with a home defeat, this was a far more satisfactory outcome.

Reaction to Varane performance
Ex- France teammate and reported Manchester United transfer target Benjamin Pavard enjoyed it, sending a message after the game with two ‘fire emojis’ to his fellow World Cup winner, who has since retired from international football.
Manchester United’s players were grateful to Varane’s contribution, including a couple who are on the injury list at present.
Amad sent a message thanking Varane for his goal, while Kobbie Mainoo also reached out to him. Jadon Sancho, a second half substitute, also showed his approval.

Varane vital at both ends
Raphael Varane’s night was more than simply his goal, and earlier missed chance. He really had to work hard to keep Wolves at bay, when the defence were often overloaded by Wolves’ counter-attacks.
Varane made five clearances, blocked one shot, and recovered five loose balls. He also completed 89 per cent of his passes.
He did this with a different defensive partner in each half, with Victor Lindelof replacing Lisandro Martinez at half-time.
Varane is a class act, and this was a great way for him to begin the season, even if United can do a lot better.
