Midfielder Juan Mata could stay in the Premier League after leaving Manchester United as a free agent this summer.

Mata was expected to depart last summer under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer only for him to sign a shock new deal at the last moment.

There will be no such u-turn this time around under Erik ten Hag as the Dutchman sets about reshaping his squad to his demands.

But the Times say that Mata could remain in the English top flight despite offers from other leagues including a return to his native Spain.

Mata could stay in the Premier League

The report says that Mata has not made a decision on his next move yet, after his exit from Old Trafford was confirmed this week.

There is also interest from MLS, and Mata also was not adverse to the idea of staying at United for another season again.

He could well be lining up against them next season and the feeling persists that he still has plenty to offer in the Premier League.

He has quality, which he showed glimpses of last term in the closing weeks, and it would be interesting to see him playing regularly once again.

Mata is a good guy and a good professional and there cannot be many United fans who would begrudge him going somewhere and getting his career going again after two years of stagnation out in the cold at Old Trafford.

It was time for United to move on from him, as ten Hag looks to move on from the mistakes which have gone before him.

That has started with the departures of some older, expensive players to hopefully facilitate a squad overhaul and we will wait to see where Mata goes next.
