Former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is being linked with an unlikely return to the club.

Jose Mourinho is currently out of work after being sacked by Roma earlier this month, with third-season syndrome striking again.

After turning down a move to the Saudi Pro League, for now, Mourinho is plotting his next move in management.

According to The Mail, Mourinho feels he has ‘unfinished business’ at Manchester United.

Jose Mourinho wants Man Utd return

The report states Jose Mourinho has ‘made it his mission’ to return to Manchester United in the future if the opportunity arises.

Mourinho was hired by Manchester United in summer 2016 and won the League Cup and Europa League in his first season.

But by December 2018, the lustre of his first season had worn off, and he had become ground down with rows over transfers, and even with his own players.

He was sacked and replaced with interim boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and went onto manage Tottenham for a brief period.

Mourinho keen to work with Ineos

It is claimed Mourinho is keen to work with Manchester United’s new investors Ineos, headed up by billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

Ineos are taking charge of football operations at the club, with the Glazers selling a 25 per cent stake in the club which many suspect will lead to more.

Mourinho return likelihood assessed

It is unlikely Jose Mourinho will return to Manchester United any time soon. Fairly or not, he is seen by man as ‘yesterday’s man’, a long way from the ‘Special One’ he once proclaimed himself as.

Europe’s top clubs are not clamouring to hire him, with his recent jobs at Tottenham and Roma seen as a rung below the continent’s elite.

It’s fair to say his time at United could have gone better, and many of the problems were not his fault, while some were.

Ineos are more likely to target a young up and coming boss like they have done at Nice, hiring Francesco Farioli, while current manager Erik ten Hag is determined to prove he is still the right man for Manchester United’s future.
