Jose Mourinho offered chance to solve £35m Manchester United problem

Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek has reportedly been offered to Roma on loan.

Gianluca Di Marzio reports Roma are assessing the chance to sign Donny van de Beek on a loan deal.

Van de Beek is described as ‘not a priority’ for Jose Mourinho‘s Roma, however, they are set to consider a move.

Di Marzio reports: “@ManUtd has also offered #vandeBeek a loan to @OfficialASRoma . For the Giallorossi it’s not a priority at the moment, but the club will evaluate it in the next few days.”

Donny van de Beek likely to leave

Manchester United signed Donny van de Beek for £35 million from Ajax in 2020.

His spell at Old Trafford has not lived up to expectations, and he has struggled to make any kind of impact.

Van de Beek has only actually started six Premier League matches in three seasons for Manchester United.

He was also sent out on loan to Everton, and this past season he has struggled with injuries, and did not play after a knee injury suffered in January.

Van de Beek is making good progress with his recovery from injury and is expected to be fit for pre-season.

However, he has little to gain from going on pre-season with United, where he is not expected to be part of the plans for 2023/24.

A loan move would be an ideal solution, because right now, Van de Beek’s value is rock bottom, United would not get anything for him.

It is in his interests to go to a new club and rediscover his confidence and show what he can do.

Former Manchester United defender Chris Smalling is at Roma, recently extending his contract until 2025.

Smalling briefly crossed over at Manchester United with Donny van de Beek.

Van de Beek signed in September 2020, with Smalling departing on the October deadline day, with the transfer window pushed back due to Covid.

However, with Smalling not part of the first team picture at that point, it’s unclear whether Smalling ever even met Van de Beek.

Jose Mourinho’s Roma are in the Europa League again next season, losing the final earlier this month to Sevilla.
