Jose Mourinho names the one man who was ‘not prepared’ for Manchester United

Former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has been speaking with Rio Ferdinand about his time at Old Trafford.

As we all get excited thinking about the new structure which is being put in place at Old Trafford, it’s easy to forget that not too long ago there was barely any structure.

During Jose Mourinho‘s time in charge, he had Ed Woodward, who effectively led the club’s sporting moves including transfers.

Mourinho would undoubtedly love to be managing at the club now to benefit from the structure Ineos are putting in place.

But reflecting on his time at the club, Mourinho has discussed Woodward and what he thought of the former Manchester United CEO.

What Jose Mourinho thought of Ed Woodward

While speaking on the VIBE with FIVE podcast, Mourinho told Rio Ferdinand all about his time at United.

This included the Portuguese coach sharing his thoughts on the former United CEO. Here he explained that he thinks Woodward was actually out of his depth in the sporting side of the business.

“When people criticise Ed Woodward, I don’t like [that], I don’t like, because for me he’s a good man, was just a man that probably was not like a fish in water, very intelligent, very polite, very correct but probably not prepared for the sports side of it.”

This is a feeling many have had towards Woodward since he left the club, while he might have been awful at effectively being the sporting director he really shouldn’t have been put in that position in the first place.

Manchester United is now a vastly different club from what Mourinho describes

Mourinho talking about Woodward and the fact he wasn’t the right person to be in charge of sporting operations are a sad reflection of what United managers had to put up with over the past decade and longer.

That trend of not having experts in charge seems to be over though, with Ineos recruiting the very best in every department including the potential arrival of Dan Ashworth who could join Omar Berrada.

Having such intelligent footballing minds in charge is a game-changing switch from what United have had in previous years and it should mean a return to the pinnacle of football is underway.
