Manchester United have some of the best retro shirts on the market.
That may be said with some bias.
However, there’s no denying that many gorgeous kits have been released by United, before being re-released as retro classics to help fans reminisce about the good old days.
Manchester United have had deals with several kit manufacturers – ranging from Umbro to Adidas, Nike and Admiral.
Adidas is the current kit manufacturer, releasing three jerseys for each season.
Older fans can’t help but get excited about the United shirts they wore in the past, even though new kits are released every season. The historic editions of the United shirt remind fans of times gone by under Sir Matt Busby, Tommy Docherty, Ron Atkinson and Sir Alex Ferguson.
Moreover, retro football shirts are a growing fashion trend. They look good and bring back core memories of your favourite football players and moments.
The latest United home kit is sponsored by Snapdragon, who replaced TeamViewer on the front of the shirt. It remains to be seen if the Manchester United first-team can deliver any silverware wearing it, which in turn would make the shirt one to remember.
Jonny Evans ranks his favourite Manchester United shirts
Jonny Evans needs no introduction as a fantastic servant to United.
After coming through the club’s established academy, Evans had made 239 appearances for United’s senior team, throughout two separate stints at the club.
Evans returned to training this week but wasn’t considered fit enough to travel with the squad for United’s 2-1 win over Viktoria Plzen. There was only one other absentee from the squad as Luke Shaw continues his recovery from injury.
The United centre-back was shown some old shirts to see what memories would resurface.
For instance, the 1992-94 home shirt reminded Evans of fellow centre-back Steve Bruce.
“Steve Bruce, here at Old Trafford,” Evans told the official Manchester United website.
The next piece of history that appealed to Evans was the 1993-95 black away shirt, famously worn by Eric Cantona during his infamous spat with an abusive Crystal Palace supporter.
Evans revealed that he associates the black shirt with Lee Sharpe after his two-goal cameos at Villa Park and Highbury while wearing it.
Arguably, one of the greatest away shirts of all time is the white strip, with red and black trim, which was worn from 1997 until 1999. It reminds Evans of legends like Ryan Giggs, David Beckham and Roy Keane.
“I think of Ryan Giggs, Beckham, Roy Keane… but most notably the game at Villa Park, the semi-final, with Giggs scoring, taking his shirt off and legging it!
“I was at my mate’s house and I remember going out into the streets afterwards. We knew it was such an iconic moment, especially with Schmeichel saving the penalty from [Dennis] Bergkamp too.”
Evans couldn’t rank retro jerseys without a special mention for the 1998-99 goalkeeper shirt, worn by Peter Schmeichel.
Meanwhile, the black shirt from 1998-99 appeared unfamiliar to Evans because it was only worn in two competitive matches.
Evans reveals favourite Manchester United shirt
Evans revealed his favourite United shirt as the 1992-1994 home version.
All of the options were iconic and Evans had several top shirts to select from.
As a boyhood Red, it’s an honour for Evans that he still playing for United at the highest level.
Interestingly, none of the shirts were worn by Evans as a player because he was too young.
Evans is currently the most experienced player at United aged 36.
