Jonny Evans signed off on an incredible playing career when he made his final ever appearance during Manchester United’s post-season tour of Asia.

It was always going to be Jonny Evans’ final appearance for United after the club confirmed three exits, with a potential 10 to follow in their footsteps throughout the summer.

Evans started in United’s 3-1 win over Hong Kong but was substituted at half-time, with Ayden Heaven coming on to replace the veteran centre-back.

It was a quiet first half for the United defence, although Godwill Kukonki was breezed past before Juninho opened the scoring, which was helped by Tom Heaton’s sloppy goalkeeping.

United turned things around in the second half following a brace from Chido Obi and a stoppage-time goal from Heaven.

It was a positive way for Evans to bow out in United’s famous red shirt.

Jonny Evans retires from professional football

After deciding to call time on his international career on 28 August 2024, making 107 caps, Evans retired from international football.

After missing a chunk of the season due to injury, it raised questions as to whether Evans would continue once his United contract expires at the end of June.

Following the 3-1 win over Hong Kong, respected reporter and United We Stand editor Andy Mitten revealed that it would be Evans’ final ever appearance as a professional footballer.

Evans will retire after making 537 competitive professional appearances at club level on top of his 107 for Northern Ireland.

The centre-back won 14 trophies throughout his career and was a member of the last United side to win the Premier League, under Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013.

Evans’ career in numbers

After graduating from United’s Academy, Evans went on to have an incredible career.

The 37-year-old was controversially sold by Louis van Gaal in 2014 and went on to have impressive spells in the Premier League at West Brom and Leicester City before returning to Old Trafford.
