John O’Shea recalls the moment the Manchester United squad found out that Sir Alex Ferguson had released Roy Keane.
Although it isn’t the case right now, there has been an Irish influence in the Manchester United first team for generations.
Jonny Evans has become a coach since being the last Irishman to play for United, before retiring at the end of the 2024/25 campaign.
Some of the greatest Irishmen to play for United include George Best, Paul McGrath, Roy Keane and Denis Irwin – but there have been other fantastic players that moved across the Irish Sea.

Are Roy Keane’s concerns valid? Or is he just adding needless negativity to the Michael Carrick debate?

It came as a big surprise in November 2005 when Sir Alex Ferguson decided to release Keane.
The decision came just under three weeks after United were beaten 4-1 at Middlesbrough.
It is believed Keane gave a heated post-match interview to MUTV after the game, but no one ever saw the footage because Ferguson and chief executive David Gill decided to shelve it.
Former United utility man and Republic of Ireland international John O’Shea reflects on hearing for the first time that Keane was no longer a United player.
“We’d gone up to the manager’s office,” O’Shea told Stadium Astro.
“The next day, we’re out on the training pitch. The manager said, ‘Listen, the best player I’ve had is gone. The best player I’ve ever had at the club is gone now. We have to move on.’
“It was a bit of a blur, to be honest. From going to a meeting where we’re looking to improve and go again, and then the next thing, Roy was gone.”
Keane went on to sign for Celtic before hanging up his boots.

Roy Keane’s statement after 2005 exit
Despite the nature of his departure, Keane wrote a heartfelt farewell message to the club’s supporters in November 2005.
“It has been a great honour and privilege for me to play for Manchester United for over 12 years,” Keane said, as cited by BBC Sport.
“During my time at the club I have been fortunate to play alongside some of the best players in the game and in front of the best supporters in the world. At all times I have endeavoured to do my best for the management and the team.
“While it is a sad day for me to leave such a great club and manager, I believe that the time has now come for me to move on. After so many years, I will miss everyone at the club.
“I send my best wishes for the future to the management, players, staff and supporters of the club.”
